Alexander South Clarke was born on 10th February 1886 at
Lingwood Lodge in Lingwood, Norfolk
as the youngest of the four children of
Richard John Clarke, a civil engineer, and Elizabeth Anne Clarke,
née Borrett. He was known to the family as 'South', that forename
having previously been used by his uncle James South Clarke.
A. S. Clarke was married at the church of St. Mary in Westminster
(closed 1923) on 18th September 1920 to Thomasine Roberts -
the daughter of William Roberts, a mining 'captain' from Perranporth in
Cornwall. Witnesses present were his mother, Elizabeth Anne Clarke, his
brother William Welham Clarke and Norma Thomas,
née Roberts - sister of Thomasine.
A. S. Clarke died on 10th May 1975 at St. George's Hospital,
Tooting in South London from a respiratory infection in consequence of a
fractured pelvis.
